Karl Burke's Woodcote Stakes winner Corporal Maddox could only manage third in the Group Three Prix du Bois at Chantilly.
The Royal Applause colt was dropping back to the minimum trip and got going all too late from his position towards the rear of the field.
The prize went to the Robert Collet-trained filly Dolled Up, who saw off Queen Mary fifth Chantilly Creme for a clear-cut success under Olivier Peslier.
Burke said: "We were always taking a chance over five furlongs as he's a six-furlong horse.
"He jumped away a bit slowly and would have been closer otherwise. He might go for the Richmond Stakes now."
Although Dolled Up was one of the outsiders here, Collet nominated the Prix Robert Papin at Maisons-Laffitte on July 26 as a target, where she could meet Richard Hannon's star Canford Cliffs.
