Kite Wood was given a well-judged ride from Frankie Dettori as he made every yard of the running in the Bahrain Trophy at Newmarket.
The Galileo colt, sent off the 2-1 market leader having finished well down the field in the Derby last time, was ushered straight to the head of affairs in the one-mile-five-furlong contest.
After slowing the tempo at halfway, Dettori asked his mount to stretch away from the two-furlong marker and he was not hard pressed to beat Tactic by two and a half lengths.
The jockey said: "He's developing to be a nice St Leger horse. That was his first test of stamina and he passed it with flying colours.
"You are always a bit concerned they will catch you, but when I asked him, he strode right out to the line. He wouldn't mind a bit more rain, but sometimes the Leger is run on soft ground."
