Haggas and Marquand combine for York treble

Tom Marquand capped off York’s final card of the season with a treble which included a cosy win in the £100,000 Coral Sprint Trophy aboard Binhareer.
The three-year-old grey was boxed in during the feature race but once a space opened up inside the final furlong, William Haggas’ charge burst through to win by two and three-quarter lengths as the 9-2 joint-favourite.
“I think he’s really come into himself now, he’s learned to relax and we’ve figured out his trip. He just got it all right there,” Marquand said.
“He just felt super comfortable, the tempo was hot which suited him as well and it was probably the perfect recipe to make him look good. He did that in good fashion.”
That victory put Newmarket-based but proud Yorkshireman Haggas one ahead of Andrew Balding as the leading trainer on the Knavesmire, an advantage which became unassailable when Morshdi (100-30) held off Richard Fahey’s Arabian Desert in the Coral ‘We’re Here For It’ EBF Maiden Stakes to wrap up the 27-year-old’s three-timer.
Marquand and Haggas had earlier combined to claim the opening Rockingham Stakes as the potentially smart Division (5-2 favourite) eased to victory in the Listed race.
On helping Haggas secure his third Charles Clinkard Top Trainer title, Marquand added: “It’s great to have brought him some nice winners throughout the year and as ever, he brings a lot of his nice horses here because it is such a beautiful track.
“I’m very aware it is somewhere that he loves to have winners and obviously being leading trainer here is an important thing to him. It’s something I’m sure he’s pretty pleased about.”
The Balding-trained Laazm (7-2) held off Boiling Over in a tight tussle to claim the Coral “Daily Reward Shaker” For Free Nursery Stakes by a neck.
The five-runner field splintered to leave the two of them battling it out for success in the mile race, but it was the Mehmas colt who just edged to success.
“I didn’t warm into it great so when they got travelling I was a little bit worried, but my lad has done it well,” said winning jockey PJ McDonald.
“It’s only his third run, he will be a nice three-year-old I’d say. He’s got a lovely mind, he’s very versatile.”
The Irishman enjoyed a double for Balding after guiding Berkshire Sundance (9-2) to a length-and-a-quarter triumph in the Coral Racing Club Stayers Handicap.
Grey Cuban defied top-weight to come out on top in a hard-fought contest and land the Coral “Pipped At The Post” Stakes.
The Hugo Palmer-trained four-year-old was in prominent position to overhaul Champagne Prince, who eventually finished third, and Insanity in the closing stages to take the half-length victory at 12-1.
“He’s a horse which lengthens rather than quickens. I know he has a lot of good form around Chester, but long straights tend to suit him and he showed a really good attitude,” jockey Jason Hart said.
“I was able to get in a good rhythm and hold a bit left for the end, so it was good.”
The Michael Bell-trained Let’s Dream (14-1) took the honour of winning York’s last race of the 2025 campaign in the Coral “Committed To Safer Gambling” Finale Handicap.
