Kalma may not be the most consistent of fillies and her form is a little hit-and-miss, but her record at Nottingham is pretty good and I’m hoping she can return to form here taking on her elders.
I really don’t think tackling this extended distance was the problem at Sandown last time, as she was well beaten before that became an issue. Her wins and good efforts have come by staying on late and powering on close home so the long straight at Nottingham might well be a positive factor.
Trainer Alan King and jockey David Probert are having tremendous seasons and Kalma can improve past some exposed rivals here if she is on her game.
Prior to her win at Windsor last time off a mark of 61, Bellevarde posted her previous success over this course and distance on soft ground, under this rider Ben Curtis and from a loftier rating of 73. On back form, Bellevarde has a great chance of following up.
She has been expected to win for quite a while having been a narrowly-beaten favourite a couple of times and will have no issues if the ground deteriorates further.
Bellevarde was the first winner for Richard Price for a while when scoring last time, but that was an overdue success as the trainer’s small string of handicappers have been performing consistently well in recent weeks.
Midfield has a typical Sir Mark Prescott profile in that she showed virtually nothing last season and won last time when stepped up four furlongs in trip to two miles to land a handicap.
The road to that success did perhaps take a little longer than some similar types – on her third handicap start - and she may not be very good as she had to drop down the weights to a basement mark to score last time. However, she did really battle and it could be that now that she knows about winning this very well-bred filly could start to make her way up the ratings.
None of the older stayers she faces here seem to be in the best of form - and certainly don’t have her potential.
