When Royal Ascot draws to a close, the focus will soon turn to Newmarket. Staggeringly, Frankie Dettori has won 35 of 36 British Group 1 races. Yet, we all want one more, don’t we?
Kinross is as low as 6-1 to complete the full set for the Italian in the July Cup at Newmarket next month. As Dettori tells David Yates (page 10), he won’t consider himself a failure if he is unsuccessful but it would clearly still mean an awful lot to complete the full set at the 23rd time of asking.
Dettori is full of confidence, even more ebullient than normal, following recent big-race wins on Chaldean, Emily Upjohn and Soul Sister, yet is candid in his chat with David saying he is never far from “making a balls-up of things” and is remaining steadfast that QIPCO British Champions Day on October 21 will be his British swansong. How we’re going to miss him.
Also in the new issue, Donn McClean talks to supremo Brian Kavanagh about his two years in charge of The Curragh and meets Dylan Browne McMonagle (page 30), the former champion apprentice, who is making rapid progress, while Gordon Brown gets to know Billy Garrity – a rare jockey in that he successfully plies his trade over both codes (page 22). We meet Market Rasen supremo Jack Pryor on his plans for the popular summer jumping course (page 26), and also reflect on the hugely popular Sky Bet Sunday Series at its midway point (page 18).
And finally, we hope you are making the most of the Weekend Ticket and the Club Days – turn to page 8 to ensure you don’t miss out on free entry to a host of racecourses.
