Hayley Turner had to make do with a narrow second at Ascot on her first ride since returning from a spell on the sidelines.
The leading female rider had been facing a year on the sidelines after suffering head injuries in a fall on the gallops in March. After being told not to reapply for a licence until next year, Turner contested that decision and was cleared to return to the saddle following a BHA medical panel review on Thursday night.
Turner partnered Prompter for trainer Michael Bell in the Iron Stand Winkfield Novice Stakes but after travelling strongly, she was beaten a head by David Probert on 15-2 chance Black Spirit.
The jockey said: "It's like getting back on a bike really, it's fantastic to be back. I'd be happy riding anywhere today and I'm not blowing too hard at all, thankfully.
"They just steadied it up a bit which wasn't ideal. He got into the race and was just outbattled at the end but he's very game and something to look forward to."
