Rock Montreal battles to Autumn Stakes victory

Rock Montreal produced a battling display to land the Group Three Emirates Autumn Stakes at Newmarket and deliver Godolphin with yet another potential Classic prospect for next spring.

The Roger Varian-trained two-year-old had seen his colours lowered by Forbidden Fire in the Flying Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster, form advertised by the winner at Headquarters on Friday.

Delivering a sustained burst through the final two furlongs of the mile contest, the 11-8 favourite reeled in Ballydoyle colt Sergei Diaghilev, who had got first run, and secured a neck victory under jockey William Buick.
