Top sprinter Utmost Respect is reported to be in intensive care after contracting peritonitis following surgery.
The Richard Fahey-trained winner of the Duke of York Stakes is suffering from an inflammation of the membrane which covers the intestines within the abdomen.
The five-year-old originally underwent surgery to remove gravel in his foot and although the operation was a success, the horse took a turn for the worse with a secondary infection, which has been diagnosed as peritonitis.
"He had surgery for a foot infection, which went well, but it weakened his system, his defences, and he's now got an infection of his gut, which is giving cause for concern," Fahey told

"He is in intensive care, on a drip, and he's receiving antibiotics and pain-killers. We are, obviously, just hoping that everything goes the right way and he comes through it successfully."
