City Of The Kings just held Webbow by a nose in a thrilling finish to the John Smith's "No Nonsense Racing" Stakes at York.
The 7-1 joint-favourite, trained at Thirsk by Geoff Harker, pulled out all the stops for Silvestre de Sousa to keep Webbow at bay. Flawed Genius was another length and a half back in third.
"After we had him cut, we turned him out during the winter to get the muscle off him as he was too heavy topped. He's just come good and is a proper horse. We bought him privately from Richard Hannon after he won a claimer at Newmarket. The key to him is fast ground," said Harker.
Gertmegalush took top honours in the John Smith's and R.A.F. Linton-On-Ouse Stakes, despite running loose after unshipping his jockey in the paddock.
The 25-1 shot cantered for two furlongs down the chute to the five-furlong start after giving Paul Hanagan a scare. However, the pair were reunited and all went well in the race as the James Bethell-trained youngster landedby a length and a half from Kingdom Of Light.
Hanagan, who had been injured when in the same parade ring only last month, said: "He whipped round first then I gave him a slap and I was down. I thought it was going to be one of those days, I couldn't believe that. It was deja vu after what happened to me at the last meeting."
