Our betting expert has three fancies for the meeting at Catterick, which you can watch live on Racing TV.
2.52 Catterick: Valley Of Flowers
There’s a decent size field for this amateur riders’ race and a good pace is on the cards, which should bring out the best in five-year-old mare Valley Of Flowers.
She has been well backed on each of her past three starts and delivered for followers of this column on her penultimate start, albeit by a narrow margin.
Lack of pace last time went some way to getting her beat, but she can be given another chance here.
Rosie Howarth finished a good second on her at Ripon, and hopefully will not go too wide this afternoon. She is an experienced rider, winning a chase at Kelso on her only other ride under Rules this year, and is on an in-form runner here and the combination looks solid in this modest event.
3.52 Catterick: Ecclesiastical
Ecclesiatical has been revitalised by a move to Tristan Davidson from Ireland and despite a rise of 15lb already he is still very well in compared to his highest handicap mark.
He has already won two modest events comfortably this season off basement marks but was beaten when odds on having been raised 9lb last time out. Obviously, that was disappointing, but things didn’t go right for him at Musselburgh. He has an extra furlong to contend with, but although he has never won over 6f he has run some good races in Ireland, in higher grades than this race, and I don’t expect any problems with the trip here.
4.57 Catterick: Albegone
It is a long time since Albegone ran in such lowly company as this 0-65 level handicap and he is now 9lb lower than when he last won a sprint. The last time he won was wearing blinkers after a few runs in cheekpieces, and that is repeated. Hopefully, the tactic will work again on this occasion.
Albegone has dropped 5lb in three runs this season, which is fair on his finishing position but each one of those runs can be rated better if a forgiving viewpoint is taken.
Last time at Chester he was carried out of a challenging position and eased down to the finish.
He could well be a sprinter ready to hit form and when he gets a decent trip through the race he should find this company very beatable. The market may well let us know when he is fancied to get the breaks.
