Course specialist River Falcon goes for a fourth York success in what will be his fourth attempt at the Sky Bet Dash on Saturday.
Jim Goldie's nine-year-old has been out of luck since winning at the Knavesmire in August 2007 and he has been unsuccessful in this six-furlong contest in 2004, 2007 and 2008. However, he showed his well-being when finishing third to Pavershooz, a possible rival again, at Ayr on Monday.
"I was pleased that River Falcon ran so well - I'd have been happier if he had won, of course. At least he thought he had won a race because he put his head in front on that side," said Goldie.
"He is a frustrating horse but he has only had one bad run this year and that was in the Gosforth Park Sprint. His form has been very level and he has run a good race each time.
"He has won three times at York and he loves the place. I don't know if he loves six furlongs at York, but he loves the track. His optimum trip is five and a half furlongs and unfortunately there is only one suitable race in the whole year and that is the Portland.
"The plan is to go to the Sky Bet Dash and after that we will look towards the Portland, in which he was short-headed last year."
