Racing TV's Angus McNae has four bets for Gowran Park, Downpatrick and Salisbury on Sunday, including one in the Listed Cathedral Stakes (3.50pm). Watch all three meetings live on Racing TV.
This well-bred filly looks to be quite useful already as she made a very taking debut when finishing fifth at the Curragh. She was given a patient ride and was handled considerately as she started to get the hang of things in the closing stages of that race plus shaped as though she would improve plenty for the outing.
She steps up to seven furlongs now, and that looks certain to suit given there is a good deal of stamina on the Distaff side of her pedigree.
She is entered in the Group Two Airlie Stud Stakes at the Curragh in two weeks’ time, which is an indication of how highly thought of she is. Her trainer, Joseph O’Brien, can do little wrong at the moment, and this daughter of Zoffany can provide him with another winner.
This five-year-old returned from a four-month absence at Killarney in May and shaped very much like a horse to follow. He was given a very patient ride that day by Jack Kennedy and, although he finished the race off strongly, he was left with too much to do.
That was 2m1f and, now that he steps up in trip to 2m5f, he looks one to side with. It is interesting that Gordon Elliott has decided to run him in a maiden hurdle, rather than exploring the handicap route, but a win here should not be too detrimental to a future mark for that sphere.
He had flashed plenty of ability over hurdles before that latest effort, notably when second to the useful Grangee at Fairyhouse last year, and this is an ideal opportunity for him to get off the mark.
I believe Nahaarr could make a big splash in the sprinting division this season. He won the 2020 Ayr Gold Cup off a mark of 100 and although he has been lightly raced since, he showed that he retains all his ability last season.
His second behind Starman at York last year was a big effort and although he failed to repeat that at Royal Ascot next time out, it’s possible that the ground was just a bit too soft for him that day.
He has been gelded since the Royal Meeting last year and has been found an excellent opportunity to kickstart his season. He is entered in the July Cup at Newmarket, which is a route that is plausible, given the ability he has shown. He can make a winning return on Sunday.
This Willie Mullins-trained mare should get off the mark here having shown a decent level of ability already. She looked all over the winner at Fairyhouse two starts ago when cruising to the front, only to be collared close home, and the two-and-a-half-mile trip possibly stretched her stamina on that occasion.
She dropped back to two miles at Wexford last time out and again found circumstance against her. She was taken very wide and gave away lots of ground compared to the winner, who got a ground-saving trip.
She did well to finish within a length of the winner in the end, and would surely have won with a better trip. She can gain compensation here.
