Dave's three main selections on Friday:
1.25 Southwell: Time For A Pint
A winning point-to-pointer (albeit due to a disqualification), this seven-year-old showed nothing in a few runs over hurdles, but that enabled him to start his chasing career off a very lowly mark.
He followed up a decent chasing debut with a victory last time out where he was sent off the well-backed 3-1 favourite, and now that he tackles another similar race, and again over a trip he is bred for, he looks set to defy an 8lb rise.
Jonjo O’Neill Jr takes over for the ride here, too, which is certainly no negative.
1.35 Catterick: Da Vinci Hand
I am sticking with this modest chaser, even though he didn’t deliver when stepped up in trip last time out.
He seemed to show, pretty conclusively, that he didn’t stay over the extended three miles on that occasion, although for a while I was pretty confident he was going to hit the frame, at least.
Da Vinci Hand drops back down in trip again here, and again races at Catterick where he has run some of his best races.
He definitely looked as though he was back in some sort of form when last seen, and he is now 17lb below his last winning mark, so is definitely handicapped to strike. Hopefully that will be on Friday.
4.00 Southwell: Hermes Le Gris
It may be too long ago for either horse or jockey to remember the race, but Hermes Le Gris probably ran his best ever race when ridden by Caoilin Quinn in a bumper at Taunton.
I would be pretty certain that Robbie Llewellyn will have looked through the form book when booking the young jockey for his first ride for the yard in what looks a weak conditional jockeys' novices' handicap hurdle, and it is not beyond hope that it may well be an inspired booking.
Hermes Le Gris has been dropped 24lb since he was given a handicap mark, but Llewellyn is making a name for himself by improving horses from other yards, and hopefully he's picked up a bargain here as this seven-year-old was purchased for £2,500 recently.
