Clive Cox has confirmed next month’s Prix Robert Papin at Chantilly as the most likely next objective for Orthodox following his brilliant victory at Royal Ascot.
An impressive winner on his Salisbury debut in the middle of May, the son of Havana Grey took a step up to Group Two level in his stride, leaving his Norfolk Stakes rivals trailing in his wake.
Cox won the same race in 2012 with Reckless Abandon, who went on to not only strike gold in the Papin but also claim successive Group One victories in the Prix Morny and the Middle Park Stakes and Orthodox looks set to follow the same path.
“He’s come out of Ascot very well, I’m very pleased indeed,” said the Lambourn-based trainer.
“It was a very good performance and it’s exciting looking forwards. I think at the moment that (Prix Robert Papin) would be the logical next step to be taking and first impressions are very pleasing in terms of how he’s come out of the Norfolk.
“I think the timeframe of the Papin and then the Prix Morny all works favourably.”
Reckless Abandon is joined by the likes of Lethal Force, Harry Angel on Supremacy on a long list of Group One-winning colts to pass through Cox’s hands.
While Cox stopped short of comparing Orthodox to his past stars, but it is clear he is held in the highest regard.
He added: “He’s a really exciting horse to have on our hands. He clearly reflected that promise and enthusiasm having given us the right sort of feeling at home.”
