David Lanigan is to wait for more suitable conditions for Ben Chorley after the grey found the going too quick at York in the John Smith's Cup.
The five-year-old had been fancied to run a big race for the Newmarket trainer following his first run for a year at Newcastle recently, but he could not act on the ground and finished last behind Sirvino.
"He didn't run his race there, he wouldn't let himself down on the ground. I don't think there was any good in it. It was firm ground," said the Newmarket trainer.
"He's fine this morning. We'll give him a rest and bring him back a bit closer to the autumn when we are guaranteed to get his ground.
"It's been frustrating, we've been stopping and starting waiting for his ground. The Cambridgeshire would be the ideal target for him in the long run."
