Ghaiyyath could seek to provide
Charlie Appleby with a second slice of Classic glory in the William Hill St Leger at Doncaster in September.
Appleby entertained
Derby aspirations for the imposing colt after he won twice over a mile at Newmarket in the autumn, latterly when staying on stoutly to land the Group Three Autumn Stakes.
Ghaiyyath signed off last season with successive wins at Newmarket (PA)
He had been on target to make his return in the Dante Stakes at York last month - and was a general 16-1 for the premier Classic - but missed both contests because of a minor setback.
In his absence, Appleby’s
Masar won at Epsom and in the process ended Sheikh Mohammed’s long quest for a Derby victor in Godolphin’s famous blue colours.
"All being you will see Ghaiyyath after Royal Ascot,” Appleby said. “He’s been jogging away and is due to start cantering next week. My plan is try and get a prep run in before the Great Voltigeur.”
That Group Two contest at York in August, won last year by Cracksman, often yields St Leger clues.
Asked if Ghaiyyath could be a candidate for the final Classic of the year, Appleby said: “He could be. The blessing for him now (with Masar winning the Derby) is that I don’t need to start pushing any more from where we are at.
“He’s got a very stout pedigree and has four-year-old written all over him, but that’s not to say he will not thrive and be a Group performer at three.”
Ghaiyyath is a general 33-1 for the final Classic of the season on September 15th, behind Derby runner-up Dee Ex Bee, who is the 6-1 favourite.
