Paddy's Pick 5 tips: Tom Bull's best bets for Saturday

Not a big field for this but the top two in the market – Marching Army and Protagonist – have their best days ahead. It’s the latter who interests me most after he finished second in his group in the Cambridgeshire, but was drawn on the wrong side and never really had a chance of winning.

Back in a completely different scenario here, he should be able to continue his progression over a slightly longer trip.

In both his British handicap victories so far, he struck me as a 100-plus rated horse in the making, so the handicapper shouldn’t yet have him in his clutches off a rating of 97.

Selection: Protagonist.

A fiercely competitive renewal of the Darley Dewhurst Stakes and Aidan O’Brien will be doing well to notch a record-equalling eighth win in the Group One contest, as Aesop's Fables appears to have a bit to find.

Nostrum has the world at his hooves after just two starts and proved he can handle the idiosyncratic undulations of the Rowley Mile in the Tattersalls Stakes last month, but Juddmonte and Coolmore could be playing second fiddle to Godolphin here.

Naval Power has done nothing but impress so far, and the way he pounded the turf once in the clear at Haydock last time was very taking indeed.

He’s been brought along gradually for this by his master trainer and has more gears than a Chris Froome-ridden BMX. Yes, he has a touch to find on ratings, but the son of Teofilo oozes class and can take the step up to Group One level in his stride.

This is a total minefield and chances can be given to plenty! That said, Irish raider Laugh A Minute has strong claims following his eye-catching third in a similarly massive field at the Curragh a couple of weeks ago.

He was held up with plenty to do but burned down the track like a paraffin lamp to grab third late on. That effort vehemently suggested the step back up to six furlongs will be right up his street, and ground conditions will be perfect for him – though any rain that falls will help too.

Off the same rating here, he could be dangerously treated. Expect him to stay on strongest at the death.

It doesn’t get any easier this afternoon and, as always, the Club Godolphin Cesarewitch is an enigma wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in a mystery.

Willie Mullins is often a good place to start, though, and his five-year-old Gibraltar has rock solid claims.

In the doldrums during the early part of the season, he’s rediscovered his mettle over the past couple of months with two emphatic victories. The most recent of those was a particularly impressive display in a hot race at Tramore where he devoured his rivals with a potent turn of pace, and although he’ll need to showcase different qualities over the stamina-sapping Cesarewitch trip, there’s plenty of staying power in his armoury.

Saffie Osborne is an eye-catching jockey booking, too, and the pair should go close at least.

A stayers’ race featuring horses not quite classy enough to get into the Cesarewitch at Newmarket – but it’s no less competitive! However, Atacama Desert sticks out like a sore thumb following his romp over course and distance last month.

It was only his first attempt at the trip, but he took to it like a duck to water and could well be a long-distance performer worth keeping on side.

It should be noted the assessor didn’t miss him (raised him 8lb) but that may not be enough given the devastating nature of that victory.

The likes of Duke Of Verona and Carrigillihy are in decent form, too, but neither should be open to the same about of progress over two-miles plus as the Atacama Desert.
