Watch and read more from Tom Stanley who reveals the four horses he has included in his ante-post Lucky 15 for this year's Cheltenham Festival. RUN WILD FRED
Race: National Hunt Challenge Cup Amateur Jockeys' Novices' Chase (Grade 2).
General odds: 3-1.
Run Wild Fred is my selection for the National Hunt Chase, and it is straight out of the 'obvious' playbook for this race.
We know that experience counts for plenty, and this horse fits the bill. He's had ten chase starts and Gordon Elliott said after his Troytown victory in November that he's got National Hunt Chase written all over him.
It is an obvious one as he’s vying for favouritism but, purely on an experience basis, he has a lovely profile for this.
SKY PIRATE
Race: Grand Annual Chase.
General odds: 14-1
The Grand Annual can be a bit of a plot race and Sky Pirate is currently rated just 4lb higher than his success in the race last year.
He's obviously been a revelation since he's been campaigned over two miles and I suppose he's been disappointing on the face of it this season, but he just hasn't been up to the higher grade, and he isn’t entered in any of those races at the meeting.
I think that this is surely where they're going to go again.
TULLYBEG
Race: Pertemps Network Final.
General odds: 14-1.
We haven't seen Tullybeg for ages but, again, it is Gordon Elliott pinpointing a race for him.
He qualified when finishing fifth in the Cheltenham Qualifier in October and Elliott said he'd be put away subsequently due to wanting decent ground. I think he headed the betting in the immediate aftermath and due to recency bias, he's been pushed down a bit.
I have no idea if he is still fit and well but he's bigger than he should be as he is out of people’s minds. I think that he's a really interesting proposition.
ALLAHO
Race: Ryanair Chase.
General odds: 11-10.
My final selection is the obvious one - Allaho in the Ryanair Chase.
I’m really surprised he’s still odds-against. How is he not going to go and win the race again? Second in the betting is Energumene, who is a non-starter, then Chacun Pour Soi (likely heads to the Champion Chase) and then Shan Blue (holds other options).
His win in the race last year was frightening, absolutely frightening, and I remember watching it and thinking: “Oh my God, he's going to keep going like this!?”
